January 5, 1858 issue of the Civilian and Gazette details the murder on page 2 in the third column. The January 19, 1858 issue of the Civilian and Gazette contains a report about Lucy’s trial on page 1 in the third column. Lucy after having undergone 40-years of severe trauma as an enslaved woman, eventually murdered her new owner with an axe. Finally, the March 9, 1858 issue of the Civilian and Gazette contains details about Lucy’s execution on page 2 in the fourth column. This March  report of Lucy’s execution which Lucy was purchased by the Doughertys at Sydnor’s auction house.
